Horse of the Year Zenyatta Bred to Bernardini

Published on Thursday, February 24, 2011 in General

Zenyatta, the sensational 2010 Horse of the Year, was bred on 23 February to Darley stallion Bernardini, the second top racemare to be mated in the Bluegrass this week.

According to the Zenyatta website, the mare owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, was picked up by a Sallee horse van from William S. Farish's Lane’s End Farm at about 7:30 am (EST) for the 10-minute trip to Darley near Lexington.

"It went very well. In horse terms, it was ‘one jump...and a very good cover’... meaning that everything went perfectly in our first meeting," said the website post, written as if told by Zenyatta.

The Zenyatta website is maintained by Dottie Ingordo Shirreffs, racing manager for the Mosses and wife of trainer John Shirreffs, who directed Zenyatta’s career to 19 wins and one second in 20 career starts.

Earlier this week, 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra was bred to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. CLICK HERE to read the story.
