Horse SA National Equine Safety Conference - Horses and the safety of people who are with them

Published on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 in General

The Horse SA National Equine Safety Conference is believed to be the first cross-sector horse industry conference of its type ever held in Australia. The event, expected to attract delegates from around Australia, will be held at the Morphettville Racecourse and Magic Millions venues.

Guest speakers include Sarah Houstoun, a stable-yard risk & safety auditor from the UK, Nina Arnott of HorseSafety Australia and Dr. Kirrilly Thompson of Central Queensland University, a cultural anthropologist with an interest in human-horse relationships and perceptions of risk.

“The horse industry is so steeped in tradition that it is not often recognised that in today’s world, many common horse handling, stable-yard or paddock practices could be considered unsafe” said Julie Fiedler, Executive Officer of Horse SA and conference organiser. “The nature of working around horses often means being in confined spaces, undertaking heavy lifts or working on uneven ground”.

The launch of the Safe Work Australia “Guide to managing risks when new and inexperienced persons interact with horses” is also scheduled to take place. The event has two target audiences. Professionals are encouraged to attend on Friday 31st October and community coaches, agistment centre managers, horse event and clinic organisers for the half day session on Saturday 1st November.
