Horse Trapped in Flooded Stable South of Brisbane

Published on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in 2011 Queensland Floods

RSPCA spokesman Michael Betty has reported that the flood water is up to the horse's shoulders in a stable at Nujooloo near Logan.

He said a vet was trying to gain access to the locked stable and was attempting to contact the owner of the property and the horse's owner.

Mr Betty said the horse appeared to be coping well and the water level was beginning to drop.

He said the RSPCA was waiting for flood levels to recede north of Townsville and Bundaberg so inspectors could carry out further animal rescues.

"There are couple of places where we've had calls about animals but the SES (State Emergency Services) have said we can't go in there yet," he said.

He urged people to organise carry crates for cats and dogs in advance in case they are forced to evacuate homes.

"Not all evacuation facilities are set up to cope with pets," he said.

It seems that hell and high water really has come to Queensland!  Remember if you are in an area being affected by bad weather and floods, follow DPI recommendations:

  • move horses to high ground, completely out of the range of flood waters, before flooding occurs.
  • move horses to a safe location, if high winds are predicted.
  • Ensure horses bear some form of identification, such as a brand, so they can be identified and returned should they become displaced.
  • Ensure that stock registers are up to date and kept in a safe place.
  • Move horses to a safe area before leaving your property for any length of time. Check with local council and other relevant agencies about emergency animal shelters and yards.
  • If a cyclone or severe storm is approaching, horses should be moved under solid cover if possible.

Let's all do everything possible to ensure our horses survive this terrible weather!
