The inaugural Inglis Equine Art Prize has been won by Kristin Hardiman from Thornleigh, NSW.
The local artist beat a pool of entries from all over the world with her touching portrayal of a protective mare and her foal.
The work 'Mother and Daughter' was painted at Everton Stud in Victoria, and captivated the judges for its sensitivity to the subject and the location.
Hardiman was awarded a cash prize of $15,000 from Deputy Chairman Arthur Inglis.
The Inglis Equine Art Prize is the only one of its kind in Australia, and was created by Arthur Inglis in association with Australian Art Sales Director Mike Coward to protect and promote this traditional art form.
"'Mother and Daughter'stood out for the judges for its faithful capturing of the emotions of a mare and foal," Coward said.
The runner-up is German-based graphite artist, Sheona Hamilton Grant, for 'Touch'.
"This is a delicate but strong drawing that shows the gentle interaction between a small child and a powerful thoroughbred."
The judges for the inaugural Inglis Equine Art Prize were Ross Harvey, one of the world's foremost exponents of Still Life painting, Alan Bell, Chairman of Racing NSW, and Arthur Inglis.
Inglis said the award brought recognition to specialist artists whose work is devoted to a love of horses.
"A profound love for animals was on show with every entry. The winner and runner-up displayed a strong combination of technical representation of the anatomy as well as capturing emotion along the theme 'Life at the Horse Stud'" Inglis said.
An exhibition of all 34 finalists opens today at the Inglis Newmarket Stables, 1 Young Street Randwick, which will then tour to Melbourne and Scone. A People's Choice award winner will be announced in Scone.
