New South Wales rider Elizabeth Lowery has won her first major three day event, taking out the Sydney International CCI3* at the International Equestrian Centre on Sunday.

Riding KL Kismet, Lowery secured the title after cross country leader Makayla Wood and her horse Early Days knocked five rails in today’s show jumping, which added 20 penalties to her score and reduced her standing to second position overall.

Lowery and Kismet had three rails down which added 12 penalties to their score, but it was enough for victory and they won the title with a score of 75.70. (Lowery’s cross country time was amended overnight which moved her within 2.3 penalties of the lead).

It is a significant moment in Lowery’s riding career and the 23 year old was proud of her horse with which she has shared a long partnership.

“I feel amazing. I’m so proud of him, he’s such a special horse. To finish with this result is amazing,

“I’m so spoilt with him. I’ve had him for five years and we started out as junior newcomers together. He’d never seen a fence really before I got him.

“Hopefully we’ll go back to Adelaide this year and do slightly better in the show jumping than we did there last year and who knows, next year we might see what we can do overseas.”

Kirsty Douglas riding Cushavon Crackerjack was the only rider to produce a clear round in today’s CCI3* show jumping and she moved from fifth after cross country to finish third overall.

Queensland rider Isabel English (Feldale Mouse) was also in contention for the title but the young rider became unstuck leading into a triple combination which resulted in her elimination.

Young riders dominated the placings in each of the major classes at the 2015 Sydney International Horse Trials with 21 year old Hayley Freilick edging out Olympian Shane Rose in the CCI2*. In the CCI1* Shaun Dillon finished in first place ahead of 17 year old Rosanna Cohen in second and 20 year old Teegan Ashby in third.
