The rain threatened early Saturday morning, but the weather Gods were kind and cleared the clouds for the Mackay & District Hack & Pony Club’s Horsezone Mini One Day Event on 7 September.
Our competitors braved the cold to prepare their horses for the Dressage phase starting with the 12 & Under Class in Ring 1 and the Open Class in Ring 2.
The other classes followed on with the Beginner 1 (12 & Under), Improvers, Beginner 2 (13 & Over) and Senior Dressage phase finishing at 11am. Up and coming rider Bree Wiblen from Sarina on Georgie B My Girl was leading the Open Section after Dressage, followed closely by local superstar Carla Adams on Winning Command.
The twenty-three competitors soldiered on as the day heated up, and the leading combination in each class kept changing. Some of these riders travelled from Sarina, North Mackay, Balnagowen and Cannonvalley, up to 140km away, in order to ride in the Mini ODE. Mackay Pony Club has the only cross country course within 250km, so it remains a popular destination for local pony club riders.
The showjumping phase was hotly contested in all classes, with most riders picking up the penalties from not riding to the ideal time. Sha-tarne Miosge in Improvers and Nadia Matthews in 12 & Under were the only riders who went clear and were within one second of the ideal time. Carla Adam's Free Willy, whilst ridden Unofficial, drew a lot of attention from the spectators being a Clydesdale cross Paint.
The cross country was an exciting phase and the pencillers, who were mostly volunteer mums and dads from visiting clubs, watched in awe as the brave horses tackled some strange looking fences with concrete blocks, tree trunks, tyres, spindles and barrels making up the 24 jumps. Unfortunately there was one fall on the 18th jump which resulted in elimination but thankfully no injuries of horse or rider.
After the official cross country phase had been run, two young riders decided to do it again, but this time, bareback! They both made it clear over all jumps, so it came down to time to decide the placings. Rachel Vella from Sarina came first, with Tori Mansfield from Cannonvalley not far behind.
The presenatation was an enjoyable experience, and the tired but happy faces of all placegetters was heart warming to see.
Tori Mansfield, Lauren Lee, Courtney Lockhart, Brooke Mansfield & Bree Wiblen all came first in their Classes, and received a trophy, sash, Horsezone cap, Horsezone voucher and Horsezone flyer. An exciting turn of events had mother Brooke Mansfield and her daughter Tori win their respective classes; they were both ecstatic to stand together at presentations with their Horsezone caps and their trophies.
The overall winner of the day, with the least amount of penalty points, traditionally receives the Frank Law Memorial Trophy, and this year's winner was Bree Wiblen on Georgie B My Girl from Sarina in the Open class. When she had come into the clubhouse for presentation, Miss Wiblen was heard to say with a sigh, "I won't win that big trophy." Proving her wrong was the highlight of the day.
A big thank you must be said to our generous sponsor for the day Horsezone. Mackay Pony Club is a small club, with a big heart, but would not be able to continue to run such events as this if not for the support of businesses like Horsezone.
