Meet Rising Star... Logan Penfold

Published on Thursday, October 3, 2013 in Young Riders

The team at Horsezone is keen to find out more about what young riders are up to and how they are working towards achieving their horsey goals. The juniors are the future of all horse sports, so in our opinion they are VIPs!

This week we catch up with 14 year old Logan Penfold who currently lives in Hallsville, 10kms north of Tamworth, NSW.

Logan has loved horses for most of his life and has been competing at shows and campdrafts since he was 8 years old.

His biggest goal has always been to compete at the National Finals and since 2010 he has done so, with this year being his first time in the top ten.

Currently Logan is placed third on the ABCRA campdraft standings for Juveniles. His goal is to keep campdrafting and learning as much as he can about the sport.

How did you first become involved with horses?

My parents were caretaking a property in the Gloucester area, the owners had a couple of horses, and my Dad got me onto one of them, an Appy mare. I also did weeks helping out at Camp Cobark, Copeland Road, Gloucester owned by Allen and Dianne Shultz. That same year I won the Lowton Family Trophy - Best Groomed and Presented Horse by a Local Child under 17yrs. I was also Reserve Champion in The Australian Pony Stud Book Society class at the Gloucester Show on 27-28 March 2009, I turned 8 years old on 27 March.

What horse sport do you mainly compete in?

Campdrafting and I have also done sporting events and showing at district shows.

What do you love about Campdrafting?

Not every draft is the same, and it's family orientated, I love camping out in my swag, sitting around at the end of the day and having a yarn.

Tell us about the horses you ride?

Mum and Dad are low income earners and I don’t own any horses, but I have always had the opportunity to ride some great horses. I like to ride Quarter Horses and Quarter Horse cross horses, as I find that they cut better in the camp, but Stock Horses can do this too, it depends on how they were broken in.

What are some of the challenges you face?

With competing it's that high cut-out score in the camp that’s hard to get and then drafting the beast around the course in a set time before the judge cracks the whip.

What achievement, so far, are you the most proud of?

Attending my very first National Finals at AELEC here in Tamworth, now my home town, after only competing and placing in eight drafts back in 2010. At the time I was entering the Nationals as a Junior competitor, with little experience up my sleeve, but still managed to place fifth in round three on a piebald mare called Troubles, owned by Kelvin and Marie Gregory “Shannonvale” Bretti, Via Gloucester.

Who are your role models?

In the beginning it was my Dad and Kelvin Gregory of Gloucester who started to get me into the campdrafting world. Now it’s also the likes of Troy Palmer, Pete Comiskey, Allan “Bunger” Young and others who have helped me on along the way.

What advice can you give to other young people wanting to get into campdrafting?

Stick to your guns and just have a go, don’t sulk if you don’t win not everyone can win on the day, but have fun.

What are you most looking forward to?

I'm really looking forward to the National Finals at AELEC in January 2014, as I have now proven to myself and others that with effort you can accomplish just about anything. To keep on campdrafting on the best horses in the business and one day have some to call mine.

If you could have a ride on any horse in the world, who would it be?

Black Caviar

How do you spend your spare time?

Every day after school mum or my sister takes me out to Todd Hammond’s place to help him break-in and train horses, weekends I’m usually drafting somewhere and school holidays I like to go to my mate's place to ride horses and drove/muster cattle, even in the Christmas holidays.

Do you have any other animals besides your horses?

Yes, I have a two week old tabby kitten on order and his name is Stui.

What is your favourite:
Movie? 8 Seconds
Song? Anything by Slim Dusty
Food? Maccas + Frozen Coke

Where would you like to be in 10 years?

Owning my own Quarter Horse and cutting arena, getting started on my own Quarter Horse breeding plan and being able to keep campdrafting because I love it.

Shout out to your supporters?

Thank you to Dad, Mum, Kelvin Gregory, Allen and Dianne Shultz for believing in me, if it weren’t for you guys I wouldn’t be where I am today!

Thank you so much for your time Logan! We wish you all the best for your future with horses and are keen to follow your progress.
