Mounted Police Patrols to Crackdown on Vandals

Published on Monday, March 14, 2011 in General

They have not been a regular sight on the Sunshine Coast since the early 20th century.

But sunshinecoastdaily.com.au has reported that mounted police are making a return to crack down on graffiti vandals and rock throwers along Caboolture rail lines.

Queensland Police and Queensland Rail have joined forces in a bid to crack down on anti-social behaviour being reported from Brisbane and further north.

Police patrols on horseback had not been used for this purpose before according to QR.

A spokeswoman said Caboolture’s rail corridor was the only Sunshine Coast network to get a mounted police patrol, but she did not rule out the patrol by horseback making its way further north in the future.

She said the mounted police patrols were an additional security effort to that of the use of improved CCTV cameras, increased mobile security patrols and train guards and the introduction of dog patrols.

“The mounted units increase the visible security presence across the rail network,” she said.

Queensland Police Service Mounted Unit officer in charge Mark Paroz said the new patrols would add a high-visibility presence to the Sunshine Coast rail network.

“These patrols will give us a quick response to some localised crime and anti-social behaviour; they will be patrolling land adjoining the rail corridor, and stations,” Senior Sergeant Paroz said.
