Narrabri to Host NSW Polocrosse Champs

More than 600 competitors and 2000 supporters are expected in Narrabri when the town hosts the 2011 NSW Polocrosse Club Championships in June.

The three-day event, to be held from 11-13 June, will feature the Australian team playing exhibition matches as it prepares to compete in the Polocrosse World Cup event in the UK.

One hundred teams from three states will compete in three days of elite competition, which will be used as a selection ground for next year’s national teams. 

President of Narrabri Polocrosse Club, Jamie Ross, said the last time Narrabri hosted a major competition was in 1994, so this event was considered a milestone for the club.

“Five years ago our club only had a handful of members and now we have over 100 members of all ages,” said Mr Ross.

“We have run coaching weekends alongside pony club events which has helped with our recruitment in the junior ranks.

“We are currently have six senior teams and three junior teams registered and we’re thrilled to be hosting the event.”

Narrabri Shire Tourism Manager Penny Phelps said the event was an excellent opportunity to showcase Narrabri.

“This event will bring in a whole range of people who have never seen the town before,” said Ms Phelps.

“We hope they might take the time to extend their stay to see some of the local sights, like the wonderful Sawn Rocks or Mt Kaputar National Park.”
