Need a New Helmet? Don't Miss This One Day Special!

Published on Friday, June 10, 2011 in General

Southern Stars Saddlery are supporting the Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness day - it's an international event encouraging the use of helmets for all riders, in all disciplines every time you get on a horse.  Southern Stars Saddlery firmly believes in promoting rider safety, not just in the sport of eventing, but for all riders.  They are proud to be the Australian Distributors of superior equestrian safety products from Point Two and Champion, products that have proven their worth time and time again.

In support of Helmet Awareness Day consider your own helmet - here is a short checklist for you to go through:
1. Have you had a fall whilst wearing this helmet?  Most damage to helmets after a fall is not visible to the naked eye- replace your helmet after a fall.  It has done its job and saved you from serious injury, but another fall with impact in the same place and it will not provide the same protection.
2. Does your helmet fit correctly?  It should sit just above your eyebrows and ear.  It should fit snug and certainly not easily rock back and forth.  There should be a small gap at your temples for improved comfort.  Your hairstyle can change the fit of your hat, and you should never wear headbands or clips under your helmet.
3. Has your chin strap stretched? Carrying your helmet, or hanging it up by the strap can stretch the chin strap, and a loosely fitting chin strap can allow a helmet to shift on your head in the event of a fall.  You should only be able to fit one finger in between the strap and your chin.  And always remember to do it up!
4. How carefully do you look after your hat? Store your hat in a hat bag. (Champion hats all come with a great carry bag just for this purpose!) Never drop it hard surfaces or leave lying in the sun as this can damage your hat.
5. What standard is your helmet?  In Australia the EN1384 and AS/NZS3838 are recognised as being appropriate for riding.  Look for the BSI Kitemark to be assured that EN1384 standard helmets are continually batch tested for quality and surpassing this standard.
6. How old is your helmet? Your helmet is an important piece of safety equipment, and should be upgraded every 3-5 years even without a fall, as the standard and technology involved in making your helmet is always improving.

If you think your helmet, or your loved ones' helmets needs replacing, on Saturday 11th June Southern Stars Saddlery are offering 20% off their entire range of Champion Helmets to buy either online or at their tradestand at Melbourne 3DE.  Now's the perfect chance to upgrade your helmet! Isn't your head worth putting in a top class helmet EVERY time you ride?
