New Accreditation Requirements for Vets Involved in FEI Competitions Effective 1 Jan 2012

Published on Monday, March 7, 2011 in General
At the 2009 FEI General Assembly, National Federations agreed to several measures as part of the Clean Sport initiative.
These measures are to increase the clarity in many areas of equestrian sport in order to ensure that the integrity of the sport is maintained now and in the future.

The amendments are in regards to the Veterinary Regulations (12th Edition) Article 1003 “Categories of Veterinarians During an Event” and Article 1005, 2.5 Secured Stable Access.

The current requirements for FEI event veterinarians to undertake an FEI Veterinary Course every 5 years will be extended to include the following categories:

- FEI Event Veterinarians*
- Team veterinarians*
- Individual Competitor's Private Veterinarians (CPV)*
- Testing Veterinarians*
- Veterinary Control Officer*
- Veterinary Services Manager*

By 31st December 2011 all such veterinarians must have attended an FEI Vet Course in order to qualify under Article 1005 (2.5) fulfil the requirements for controlled access to the stable area. Only those veterinarians who understand the requirements and the rules of FEI competition may have such accreditation.

Rationale For changes:
The welfare of the horse is at the heart of equestrian sport. Ensuring that Veterinary Rules are applied consistently at FEI events protects not just welfare, but also delivers the spirit of fair play within the sport.

All Veterinarians present at FEI events have a role to play in ensuring the above. Therefore it is important they are familiar with the FEI Veterinary Regulations, the purpose behind certain policies, new measures, the changes that have taken place and to understand the challenges being faced.
