NSW Riders Set to Dominate - Spring Showcase of Showjumping

Published on Thursday, September 12, 2013 in Sponsored Shows

Three of the hot favourites to take out this year’s Australian Showjumping Championships will have their final hit-out this weekend at the prestigious Spring Showcase of Showjumping at the Sydney Polo Club grounds in Richmond NSW on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The trio, all from NSW, includes reigning national senior title holder Tom McDermott, based at the magnificent Fernhill Estate at Mulgoa (near Penrith), Pitt Town’s Sharon Slater (runner-up to McDermott last year) and current Australian World Cup leader Jamie Kermond from Ebenezer (pictured at the Glen Haven Park Grand Prix Show on Ajado). All will compete at the picturesque polo venue before heading to Victoria for the Australian Championships the following weekend.

The Showcase of Showjumping is the brainchild of John and Kerrie Winning of the Australian family business “Winning Appliances”. As well as hoping to raise the standard of jumping in Australia, the Winnings aim to expose the sport to a wider public audience by presenting it in a family-friendly, exciting format, with ringside catering and crowd participation.

The Highlands field at the Sydney Polo Club provides the ideal backdrop – the Hawkesbury property boasts an authentic rustic pavilion, magnificent trees and acres of manicured turf.

As well as the top Australian riders, there will also be a strong contingent of Kiwis competing.

Equestrian is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete equally against each other for individual medals.

The Spring Showcase will have two major competitions. Saturday will feature a “Boys v Girls Charity Challenge” in a dash-for-cash event with the prize money going to the Cancer Council.

Then on Sunday, it’s the big one – the Gold Class final – with the added spice of some good oldfashioned trans-Tasman rivalry.

Where: Sydney Polo Club, 100 Old Kurrajong Road, Richmond NSW.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 13-15, from 8am to 4pm each day.

Free admission and parking
