Nutrition 101: Feeding the Two Year Old During Breaking In

Published on Thursday, November 3, 2011 in General

It's that time of year when many people have two year olds being broken in and are keen to find out the best feed for their precious youngsters, during this important time.

So, we asked Peter Pryde - from Prydes EasiFeed - for his advice...

"There are two major considerations to be made when selecting a feed for a two year old being broken in. Firstly, the feed needs to help youngsters cope with the new demands of work and prevent excessive weight loss. Secondly, however, the feed needs to be able to provide two year olds with energy without making them hyperactive or 'hot', as it is very difficult to educate a young horse that won't think. Feeds with a moderate level of energy and high quality protein, that are either high in fibre or contain cooked grains are most suitable."

"Pryde's EasiSport, a high fibre, non-grain feed and Pryde's EasiPrep Concentrate, a palatable sweetfeed with extra oil and sunflowers are both feeds that would suit breakers that are in good condition and don't need much feed to hold their weight. EasiSport is a 'cool feed' so it would suit youngsters with a tendency to be hyperactive, while EasiPrep Concentrate is particularly useful where the appearance of the horse is a priority."

"Pryde's EasiResponse or Pryde's BioMare Cubes are fully extruded (cooked) feeds that suit youngsters who are struggling to hold their weight and need extra feed during the breaking in process. EasiResponse is specifically designed as a performance horse feed and is a great choice for young horses under moderate to heavy workloads, while the BioMare Cubes are particularly suited to young horses needing to gain weight and build muscle mass."
