Nutrition 101: Holiday Feeding of Competition Horses

Published on Thursday, December 22, 2011 in General

Going away for holidays is great, except if you have a menagerie it means farming them out to kennels or catteries and in the case of horses, finding someone suitable to care for your beloved equines.

Even when you've found a trustworthy person to care for your horses during the month you'll be away, you need to work out what your kind carers should feed them during this time.  Especially a competition horse that is only having a break during your absence and will be immediately getting back into work on your arrival home.

We asked Peter Pryde - from Prydes EasiFeed - for his advice on holiday feeding...

"The answer to this question really depends on your horse and his specific needs. Some horses lose weight while they are in work and holiday time is an ideal time to build them back up, as you can feed them a weight gain diet, without having to deal with the attitude that sometimes comes with a weight gain diet. The Pryde's BioMare cubes are a great feed for putting weight on all types of horses and they have the added advantage of being really easy to feed so it won't take your horse sitter long to feed up.

If your horse needs to just maintain weight and can do this easily if left just on good quality pasture or lots of good quality hay, one of the Pryde's Pasture Balancer Pellets (the 150, 200 or 250 Pellets) are ideal for just topping up vitamin and mineral intakes to keep your horse nice and healthy while he is having a break. Again they are nice and simple for your friends to feed out.

Of course be sure to have lots of pasture or hay available all the time to keep your horse full and happy and also provide constant access to a salt lick and clean, fresh water."

Happy Holidays!
