Olympic Test Event in London Underway

Published on Monday, July 4, 2011 in General

The CIC** Greenwich Park Eventing Invitational is under way in the magnificent Greenwich Park in south-east London – venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian competitions.

A total of 40 athletes from 23 countries are taking part in the Invitational, which offers the normal grading points for an international CIC**, and which involves Dressage today (Monday 4 July), Cross-Country on Tuesday and two rounds of Jumping on Wednesday - in order to reflect the Olympic format.

Dressage starts today, with the first competitor into the arena at 9.00am local time. (6.00pm EST).

Australia is represented by Clayton Fredericks and Bendigo (winner at the recent CCI3* Saumur), and Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh (most recently 2nd in the CCI2* at Houghton).
Olympic gold medalist, Stuart Tinney is at the event as an observer, along with the Australian team vets and the Chefs d’Equipe for each discipline.

The ground jury for the test event is Nick Burton (Great Britain), Anne-Mette Binder (Denmark) and Gillian Rolton (Australia).

A further Australian connection is Logan Rawlings’ (USA) mare, Jaybee Star Celebrity, who was previously owned and produced to 3* level by Sharmayne Spencer.

The cross-country course is designed by Sue Benson, who is designing the Olympic course.  The track is long and uphill, requiring a high degree of fitness.  It follows some of the planned course for the 2012 Games, and includes some of the same features.

The event will allow the London 2012 Organising Committee to test key aspects of its operations in preparation for next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games – including the field of play, timing and scoring technology, venue installation and workforce.

The event also provides an ideal opportunity for athletes and team officials to get a feel of the venue ahead of competing there at the 2012 Games. In addition to the core eventing competition, the Greenwich Park Eventing Invitational will include demonstrations of dressage, jumping and para-dressage – giving athletes from these disciplines the chance to provide feedback on LOCOG’s plans.

The list of athletes competing is below.
