Online Horse Owner Survey on Hendra Virus

Published on Friday, January 13, 2012 in Health

The DPI's Horse Owner Survey on Hendra Virus will ask Queensland and New South Wales' horse owners about their understanding, attitudes, opinions and horse management practices relating to Hendra virus.

The DPI will use that information when developing future Hendra virus risk management strategies, plans, communications and policies.

About 300 horse owners have taken part in a biosecurity survey to gauge attitudes and perceptions about the hendra virus.

Owners and workers in the equine industry in Queensland and New South Wales are being asked to assess the authorities' response to the virus.

More than 20 horses died from hendra virus last year, with the latest death near Townsville, in north Queensland, this month.

Biosecurity Queensland spokesman Dr Hume Field says the survey will also look at vaccination.

"The responses of the horse owners will allow us to provide more targeted hendra information that ensures that all the horse owners have ready access to hendra information and advice so they can reduce the hendra risk for their horses even further," he said.

The survey closes on 28 February 2012.
