Published on Friday, October 15, 2010 in General
On Saturday 23 October, Brisbane's Doomben Racecourse will be invaded by all the glitz and glamour of professional polo! Situated only minutes from the heart of the CBD, Doomben is the perfect location for this exciting event. Commencing at 11.00am the polo will run through until 5.30pm and will be followed by an After Party until 7.00pm. The national sporting series, Paspaley Polo in the City has this year extended the series across five capital cities and for the first time has added Brisbane to its’ tour schedule.
To provide a suitable venue for this prestigious event, the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) has built two polo fields within the centre of the racetrack at the Club’s Doomben Racecourse. The fields, one international standard and one smaller field for feature events, took five months for the BRC Racecourses Manager and his team to construct. The larger field, dimensions 240m x 100m wide, is bigger than the Gabba, MCG and also the entire surface of the Doomben course proper.
Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Paspaley Polo in the City, has grown to become a hugely exciting spectator event which showcases Australia’s top professional polo players. Often likened to the way in which Twenty20 has transformed cricket, Paspaley Polo in the City has revolutionized the traditional polo match to create a high octane, fast-paced and dynamic spectacle.
An all star lineup of players will display their high speed athleticism as teams of four steer their mounts across the field to achieve the most goals. Argentinean horseman, Jakob von Plessen, will marvel spectators with his performance on the field. The 27-year-old von Plessen is most famous for his documentary series, The Rider, in which he takes viewers around the globe as he learns from and competes against the greatest horse riders in the world.
Paspaley Polo in the City brings together a dazzling combination of the world’s fastest ball sport with hospitality and entertainment, to form an unforgettable day out for Brisbane. Tickets are onsale now through Ticketmaster. The Paspaley VIP Marquee ($278.50) will offer a chic and vibrant experience complete with Veuve Cliquot and lunch prepared by celebrated Australian chef and owner of Brisbane’s e’cco restaurant, Philip Johnson. Tipped to be immensely popular, the Coopers Bar ($55) will offer direct views of the polo field and a wide choice of food and bars from the within the marquee. Other features will include an After Party with DJ Andy Murphy providing the tunes. The fun doesn't finish there, on conclusion of the After Party, buses will depart the polo and deliver guests to Cloudland, Brisbane's most exclusive venue, where they will be able to kick on until late, enjoying sensational cocktails, exciting decor and exceptional music.
