Prince Fluffy Kareem and Other Egyptian Horses in Dire Need

Published on Thursday, June 23, 2011 in General

Prince Fluffy Kareem is the latest member of Royalty to give his name to a Facebook page, however, he doesn't live in a palace and certainly hasn't had a charmed life, but is one of many Egyptian  horses currently in dire need.

Prince's Facebook page is very informative, saying, "As a result of the recent revolution in Egypt, the number of tourists visiting the pyramids dropped dramatically and the Pyramid Horses that the tourists used to pay to ride and view the pyramids from had no customers. Several hundred of these horses (there are over 2000) were already in very poor condition and now, with no tourists, they are in a terrible state and they are not making money, so they do not get any food!"

"ESMA (Egyptian Society of Mercy to Animals) joined forces with The Brooke and organised regular 'feeds' for the horses in most need. The Brooke has since pulled out of feeding these horses, although we are always begging them to help again and as a result these horses are now in a dire and pitiful place, they are literally starving to death."

"Prince Fluffy Kareem is a horse that had been noticed a few weeks ago as going downhill fast. Sadly, ESMA do not have the funding to be able to buy these horses to save them, but luckily a young student, Marte, who had already rescued a tragic bay mare Na3Na3 (with malaria and other terrible issues) stepped in and saved Kareem from certain death, he was in such a pitiful state that we cannot believe he even made it to the feed site that day - 31 May 2011."

"With Marte's actions, a few of us around the world promised to help, when we could, with finances so that this gentle horse could, hopefully, be nursed back to good health again. Marte's dream is that these rescue horses will one day be able to offer riding for disabled children and we keep that dream in our hearts."

"A stable yard with boxes for respite and recuperation is also a dream, which we are currently trying to raise awareness about, so these horses can be guaranteed a better life, with regular food in their bellies and no sores or painful open wounds that rub and cause agony when they are ridden. We are hoping the world will take notice of this pocket of utter despair in Cairo and be moved enough to help us alleviate these horses 'living hell' even if we can just keep on feeding them it will be something. ESMA have only enough funds for a few more feeds now."

"In the meantime, we have Kareem and Na3Na3 to care for and support Marte from afar, as best we can. Kareem is in a difficult place at the moment as he is terribly weak still and struggles to stand up again if he has lain down from sheer exhaustion. As horsey people we know the dangers of a big animal being on the ground for too long...."

ESMA and Marte have asked, "Please join us on Kareem's journey, nail biting though it is, it will be a story of hope if nothing else."

The Facebook page is regularly updated by Wendy (from ESMA) and Marte with photos and details of how his Highness is progressing.  They do not dwell on the awfulness of the situation but write with hope and kind humour of the Prince's progress. Kareem has many followers already and it's wonderful to see him slowly improving each day, but it's a very long road yet.  So if you haven't 'Like'd Prince Fluffy Kareem's Facebook page yet, be sure to visit and check it out!  The more people who 'Like' the page the more attention will be drawn to the plight of the Egyptian horses.

Hi, thank you for this fantastic article, I am the ESMA supporter, Wendy, in this article, we are all very appreciative of your superb effort to help us raise awareness for this shocking situation - Breaking News this morning is that there has been another out break of trouble, very serious one, which has terrible implications for these horses as the tourists were only just starting to trickle back to the pyramids, now they will stay away again and even more horses will die of starvation. PLease visit Kareems FB page, every member counts in our attempt to spread the word and hope for some global assistance. Thank you all again, so very very much, you are stars xxxxxxxxx
