Qld Police Service Mounted Division Continues 150 Year Tradition
Published on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in General
The Mounted Unit is a unique and historic part of the Queensland Police Service (QPS), providing effective and specialist policing for over 150 years. Currently the unit maintains between 18 and 21 horses on active duty.
The horses were previously all donated thoroughbreds and mostly ex-race horses. Last year, the QPS purchased some Australian Stock Horses and heavy horse cross breeds. These horses – Tyson, Jigsaw, Geronimo, Eton and Dart – are generally younger than the previous recruits and can be trained specifically for their future duties.
