Report Reveals Qld Government's Handling of Hendra Deficient
The Queensland Ombudsman has reported a number of failures in several government agencies in the handling of hendra virus outbreaks.
The report, released by Ombudsman Phil Clark, examined the State Government's response to six major outbreaks of the virus between 2006 and 2009.
His report says outdated and inconsistent policies and procedures were used, there was inadequate training and resources for agency staff, and communication was poor.
He says the recommendations from previous internal and external reviews were not implemented.
Mr Clark has made 74 recommendations, including better training, clearer information about protective clothing and equipment, and a review of the guidelines on testing procedures.
He says the agencies responsible have made significant progress since 2009, but more work needs to be done as a matter of priority.
