While media frenzied in the Nation’s capital last week, over 700 horses graced the ActewAGL Royal Canberra Show for four days of good old fashioned Australian Royal Show action.
Opting to go with the more classical Royal Show programme for the jumping, the organising committee decided to change from the prevously used grade system to the part format this year. This included Group A sections 1 (A &B Grade), 2 (B&C Grade), 3 (C&D Grade) Group B Junior and Group C Speed section.
The highlight of the jumping was Tom McDermott blitzing the field. He took out the Grand Prix on CP Rolex and culminated in winning the leading rider with CP Romantic Dream being the leading section A horse. Be sure to watch Tim Dreverman's exclusive interview with Tom below!
Locals were pleased to see Vicky Roycroft back at Canberra Royal after many years away.
Novelty events kept the crowds pleased in the evenings with Saturday’s Speed Derby under lights a big hit. Leeson Sirett built a long and testing showjumping/cross country course with 20 fences over a crazy 640 metres. Neville Cousner took out the quinella with his two horses.
Much appreciation should go to the ACT Showjumping Club who provided all of the gear and workers. Continuing thanks to Peter Dingwall, counsellor in charge of showjumping, Grant Hughes, Stephen Dingwall and Jamie Grant for all of their behind the scenes work.
- The relaxed, old school country show atmosphere.
- Families working together to get children and their steeds looking and working their best.
- For those too chicken to have a crack at the bareback high jump, the rides were exhilarating enough.
- Tim Dreverman's commentating!
- They've been around a few years now, but big bling browbands on the show horses, even the smallest ponies, still seem to be the go!
- Bling on jacket collars and boots.
- Extreme horse make up.
- Wearing jodphurs even if not actually riding - equestrian attire for competitors entourages is big right now!
- Animo and Equiline clothing.
- Ralph Lauren polo shirts.
- Frantic updating on Facebook after classes.
- Australian Stock Horses - led and ridden - there were plenty of top quality examples of this breed competing this year.
- DP Amazing - Dale Plumb went Champion Hack at Canberra two years running with this beautiful horse.
-
Gorgeous heavy horses - especially Clydesdale Tullymore William, owned by Shaun & Yvette Moloney, who was awarded overall Supreme Heavy horse, which is judged from the Champion Percheron, Shire and Clydesdale horses.
What's Not?
- Inclement weather!
- Losing the car in acres of carpark in searing heat!
- Pig racing. What an anticlimax.
- The campdraft - only 2 scores due to the cattle being very flighty.
- Better utilisation of the space in the arena is needed.
