RSPCA is Calling for Donations to Help Animal Flood Victims

Published on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in 2011 Queensland Floods

These photos were taken in South East Queensland where the flooding has been bad but no where near as devastating as the floods further north and west.  In the South East we have been lucky - paddocks, stables and roads are under water, but there is high ground for the horses and most of our houses and pets are safe.  Not so lucky are the people and animals living in other areas of this huge State and they need our help.

RSPCA Queensland is calling for donations that can be used to purchase pet and livestock supplies in areas affected by the current flood crisis. They are urging people to donate financially rather than dropping off supplies because of the logistics involved in moving those much need items throughout the State. Money that could otherwise be used to help animals would be taken up in transportation and packaging costs.

RSPCA's Townsville and Fairfield Shelters sent crates to help authorities deal with domestic pets stranded in Theodore and have now set up a temporary Shelter at the evacuation centre at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton. They have also set up a data base of foster carers in the area who can look after pets and livestock during the crisis. There are three RSPCA Inspectors plus a boat and their volunteer ambulance devoted to animal rescues. To date their efforts have been encouraging, particularly in regard to livestock and native wildlife.

In simple terms RSPCA are doing the best they can, however, they are a charity and are continuing to rely on assistance from local authorities and of course the pet and livestock owners of Queensland.

The dedicated Inspectors and ambulance officers are continuing to do their utmost to help animals affected by the floods, but if you are able to help, your financial assitance will ensure they can carry out this important work.
