Second Hendra Outbreak in Qld - One Horse Dead in NSW
Published on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in Health
Authorities have now quarantined four Queensland properties due to two separate hendra virus outbreaks. The latest case in Queensland is at a property in the Boonah area south-west of Brisbane. Biosecurity Queensland says test results overnight confirmed a sick horse at the Mount Alford property had hendra virus.
There has also been a confirmed case of hendra in northern New South Wales. Lab tests show a horse on a property at Wollongbar was suffering from the virus when it was put down on Thursday morning.
Further tests are being conducted to determine whether the Mt Alford horse contracted the disease from another horse on the property that was euthanased about a fortnight ago. Biosecurity Queensland says the vet that treated that horse believed it had colic.
