Secure Movie History at The Cup Dispersal Sale
Published on Monday, November 15, 2010 in General
Inglis will be the stage for a sale slightly different to the norm, with ‘The Cup Unreserved Dispersal Sale’ set for Sunday 21 November, offering buyers the opportunity to secure their piece of Australian movie history.Thoroughbreds will still be the order of the day at the Oaklands Complex in Melbourne however, this sale has a twist. Approximately 50 horses will be on offer, all of which have been used in the filming of the story of Damien Oliver, Dermot Weld and Media Puzzle’s extraordinary 2002 Melbourne Cup victory.
Commencing at 11am, the horses, some of which are fit and suitable to go back into racing, will then be followed by a selection of horse gear including racing bits and bridles, saddles, hundreds of Weatherbeeta winter rugs, woolen rugs and summer sheets.
On the memorabilia side, framed original photographs and silks from Hyland Sportswear that have been signed by the actors will also go under the hammer.
Horsezone Business Manager Haylie Martin spent an afternoon at the property where the horses are being trained and prepared for filming and was impressed with what she saw “There’s a range of types from horses that would suit pony club to good turn-over projects as hacks, jumpers, polo ponies or eventers. The horses were all in great condition and having had to habituate to all the different scenarios filming wise, they seemed pretty unflappable”
The Cup is directed by Simon Wincer, who lays claim to other epic Australia horse films such as The Man From Snowy River and Phar Lap, and stars Stephen Curry, who had to strip down 15kg for his role as jockey Oliver. The cast also includes award-winning Irish actor Brendan Gleeson as legendary trainer Dermot Weld, Tom Burlinson as his race manager Dave Phillips and ubiquitous Australian veteran Bill Hunter in a brilliant grey wig as Bart Cummings.
The horses will be available for viewing on Sunday morning prior to the sale.
