Show Horse and Spectator Delight at the Greatest Show on Turf - Barastoc Horse of the Year Show

The 2014 Barastoc Horse of the Year Show, presented by Equestrian Victoria (EV) welcomed more than 1,200 horses to Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre for the four-day competition, which this year took on a new format to see judging of all Saddle Horse classes taking place on Thursday, 13 – Saturday, 15 February. 

The Show’s popular breed showcase, which included events for Arabians, Shetlands, Riding Pony, Welsh and Australian Pony Stud Book (APSB) stock was partnered with the HRCAV and Carriage Driving for Sunday’s program.

Equestrian Victoria CEO, Greg Pratt congratulated all exhibitors at this year’s event and thanked the Show’s principle sponsor, Barastoc for its ongoing support of the Show, which this year celebrated its 45th anniversary.

“Equestrian Victoria is proud to offer a showcase of Australia’s best seasoned and first year Show Horses and to provide a spectacle to the wider community of this magnificent sport.

“Throughout its 45 year history, the Barastoc Horse of the Year Show has been forever evolving; this year’s new program and new competition arena and spectator facilities was fitting for a Show that has shaped the Australian show horse scene,” Mr Pratt said.

This year, 82 coveted broad Champion sashes and garlands were awarded throughout the four day event. Experienced horses and riders and those newer to the showring were amongst the successful entrants, each presided over by guest judges from the United Kingdom and showring masters from around Australia.

Courtney Remington and her Willowcroft Chance Encounter took out the Barastoc Horse of the Year title for the second year in a row as well as the Barastoc Senior Hack Championship. Laura Thomas and her thoroughbred gelding Tattinger were sashed Reserve Champion.

Rightfully Yours, exhibited by Mark Kenzig and owned by Susan Gorst, won the Sunsense Newcomer Hack Champion, following a racing career that saw the bay gelding win more than $550,000 before his career as a show horse beckoned.

Briony Payne, a prolific winner in the show ring rode the Burns and Bank’s nomination Wesswood Magic Caste to victory in the Barastoc Galloway of the Year section whilst Chanel Hunter and Lyn Warburton’s Rosedale Songster took out the Large Pony title.

Arygl Stud, Andrew and Charlie Hunt’s Argyl Royal Flush won the Barastoc Small Pony of the Year title, ridden by Jess Marnie.

Sunday’s best of breeds Supreme Champion, presented by Gorst Rural Supplies, was awarded to La Bella Park Patient, owned Shannon Beani and exhibited by Robert Day.

Supreme Ridden was awarded to Glo-Brook Select, owned by Carolyn Alker and riden by Indi Shepheard.

EV now turns is Show Horse expertise to its State Titles, to be held on Saturday, 15 – Sunday, 16 March, 2014 at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre.
