Following on from the Qld Festival of Dressage, the Brisbane CDI, held at QSEC 26-29 July, provided Queensland dressage fans another opportunity to watch top class horses, this time at an international level competition!

The weather mostly behaved well except for a storm that brewed on Friday afternoon and looked like it was going to blow everyone away, but then kindly decided to move around. Saturday was very windy but at least the sun shone throughout, giving a break from the previously wet winter.

The Horsezone Intermediate II class was held on Thursday and was won by Heath Ryan on board the stunning stallion Regardez Moi with 65.87, while Alexandra Berns and Kings Legend placed second with 65.03 and Alexis Hellyer riding Waca W took out third on 62.42. Congratulations to these riders!

Leading up to the Australian Sports Commission Grand Prix CDI-W it was a pleasure to watch the likes of OO Seven, Regardez Moi, Fisherman's Friend and Prestige VDL, just to name a few, warm up in the outdoor arena. These horses were all just as well mannered and beautifully behaved as they are in their tests. The stallions and their riders all looked wonderfully relaxed and were a pleasure to watch in the warm up and in the competition. This event was also won by Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi on 66.85, with Caroline Wagner's lovely Tango V placing second on 64.57 and David Shoobridge and the impressive OO Seven third on 63.91.

The Prydes EasiFeed Grand Prix CDI-W Freestyle saw these horses battling it out again on Saturday night and on this occasion OO Seven and David Shoobridge were victorious, with Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi second and Tor Van den berge and Fisherman's Friend third. See the link below for full details of the scoring.

I also enjoyed watching the young horse qualifier classes, where two riders performed (not a test) at all paces in the dressage arena, as instructed by a caller. On completion, the judges told each rider what they did and didn't like about their horses and their performance and then the top scoring riders went through to the Championship where they did perform a test. View all young horse results at link below.

Event organiser, Cathie Drury-Klein, was happy with how the event was going when I spoke to her on Friday afternoon,  saying, "There are top quality horses here competing at all levels and we are happy with the number of entries, considering the Olympics are on now as well. The young horse classes are popular and have good numbers. QSEC is a great venue for this event and a real asset to Queensland. This is the first Brisbane CDI in several years and of course the first held at this new venue. We're really looking forward to next year, when everything will be even bigger and better!"
