Stallion of the Moment: Charming VC (IMP USA)

“Dreams can come true” and for the owner of Charming VC (Magnum Psyche x VC Couture), Yvonne Barlow of Natham Park Arabian Stud, this is certainly true. Yvonne dreamt of owning a son of Magnum Psyche. But never thought it would ever be possible.

Yvonne saw an advert for a breathtakingly beautiful chestnut colt to be auctioned on Arabian Select. Just a baby, she then saw he was out of an exceptionally beautiful Da Vinci FM daughter called VC Couture. She rushed to find out when the auction was on.

Yvonne had never ever thought of bidding on an overseas auction, so she registered to see the bidding and looked more closely at Charming. She watched his video footage - and decided he was just perfect! Yvonne checked and there was no other horse in Australia by Magnum Psyche out of a Da Vinci daughter, so she made a preliminary bid and waited anxiously to see if she would be lucky, but the figure was way below the reserve price. She contacted the owner, Nikole Gust (now Reece), from the US and asked for more photos of him to see his legs, feet, back etc, and found Nikole delightful to talk to. The night before the 11am deadline in Australia was a very anxious time.

Yvonne said to husband Ian, "I am having second thoughts, I will be 60 next birthday, maybe I have left my run too late to own an imported colt of this standard”. Ian said to her “You are living, that is what you are doing, but don’t buy Charming… I’ll buy him for you for your 60th birthday!”

What a sleepless night that was! As the clock hit 10.30 am, Yvonne placed a bid she believed would be the reserve and at 11.00am Charming was hers. Ian and Yvonne both cried as they knew he would be coming to Australia to live with them. When he became theirs, Yvonne contacted IRT and after the appropriate quarantines, he arrived at their doorstep, looking more beautiful than his video or pictures.

Charming's nature was the most precious of all, says Yvonne, “He is a very loving horse who just wants to please and now his trainer Wayne Backhouse and Jody Grading of Global Equine Marketing are as proud of the boy as us. His numerous Supremes and Championships have been unbelievable and he just keeps getting better. To see that photo of Charming’s head disappearing into a crowd of young children and nuzzling up to them after he won Supreme All Breeds at Nambour Show 2011 was amazing. Everybody in the stands could see what a fabulous temperament the colt had."
