Sometimes horses and people are just meant to be together - Jeanne Parsons and imported Quarter Horse stallion, Kids Classic Fella, are a perfect example of an equine-human match that had to happen!
Jeanne and husband Ray, owners of Skycastle Quarter Horses situated near Gympie in Queensland, have long been fans of Quarter Horses, especially palominos. Then when Jeanne first caught sight of nine month old colt, Kids Classic Fella (aka KC), on a US website she instantly fell in love and buckskins were elevated to the same status as palominos.
Unfortunately on this occasion KC wasn't meant to make the move to Australia, in fact he and Jeanne had to wait another three years before they would finally meet.
Determined to import a top quality Quarter Horse colt into Australia, Jeanne had decided on a cremello when Ray suggested she have one more look, just in case there was a horse she liked better. Importing a horse is not a decision to be taken lightly, so Jeanne revisited all her favourite US websites and low and behold - there was Kids Classic Fella for sale! By this time the stallion had won so many major events in the USA Jeanne thought she would never be able to get him. She was so excited and keen to phone his owner immediately, however, it was the middle of the night in America. When the morning finally came, Jeanne immediately looked up KC's advert and it had been removed! She called anyway, to find out what had happened. Much to Jeanne's horror, it turned out the seller had decided not to part with KC after all and had taken down the advert. To cut a long story short, Jeanne eventually convinced the owner to sell KC and he was hers!
Kids Classic Fella finally arrived in Australia in early 2012 and after spending the requisite time in quarantine, made the trek to Queensland on a horse transport. Then it was looking like Jeanne still may not get her boy, due to the Queensland coast being inundated with flooding, however, after much detouring and delays the truck finally arrived (nearly 12 hours late!) with its precious cargo.
Understandably KC was rather distraught from this trip and arriving after midnight added to the drama of the whole situation. Luckily, Cooly, a friendly palomino yearling gelding was in the barn to keep KC company and they've been inseperable ever since, "Cooly is best mates with KC," says Jeanne, "it's just like how Seabiscuit had his palomino companion! They are the absolute greatest friends. KC is standing at Equivet Australia in Toowoomba this stud season and they've kindly agreed to let Cooly tag along to keep him company."
"KC has the most beautiful nature, he's really easy to get along with, loves company and being around people. He loves kids! It's great to see so much interest in him since he arrived, with many people making the trip up here to see him. Competitors who are travelling to Queensland for the Quarter Horse State Championships have even scheduled in a visit."
"Although he has great halter bloodlines, KC also has top ridden bloodlines, which include horses that have excelled in rodeo in the USA. KC is very athletic and so fast!"
"We have several campdrafters and team penners interested in breeding to KC and two reining mares already booked to him. There are also some top quality Quarter Horse and Paint show mares booked and Appaloosa breeders have shown a lot of interest. We'll be breeding KC to our own mares, including our top girl Sweet Smoothy. As this is his first season at stud, he is only standing to a limited number of mares and the book is filling up fast. We've kept the introductory stud fee reasonable - most horses of this calibre with KC's achievements are well over $2000."
