Stallion of the Moment: Pechey Stud Tradition - Talent and Temperament

Published on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in Stallionzone

If you're looking for an immaculately bred and extremely well performed Australian Stock Horse stallion to breed to this season, be sure to check out Pechey Stud Tradition, now standing at Warregold Stock Horse Stud in Chinchilla.

Steven and Ursula Keating, owners of Warregold stud, purchased Tradition, a fifth generation Australian Stock Horse stallion, in October 2011 and are looking forward to standing him this season to outside mares.

"Tradition has the most amazing temperament and so much talent, which he passes on to his foals," says Ursula. "He is a lighter, more Thoroughbred type and has heaps of ability on a cow. People from as far away as Victoria, who had bred to Tradition previously, decided to breed to him again becuase they are so impressed with his progeny. We sent chilled semen to the Victorian breeders and all the mares inseminated were preg tested in foal."

"Even though he has more than proven himself with past performances, we are going to campaign Tradition at drafts this year. Mainly because I want to enjoy him but also so people in Queensland can see him in action. We are taking him to Capella draft this weekend, where I will be competing on him. From there we'll be focusing on the more local drafts of Surat and Pittsworth, however, we would also like to go to Paradise Lagoons and the big three - Condamine, Chinchilla and Warwick."

So if you're out and about at any of these drafts, be sure to keep any eye out for Tradition who will be ridden by Ursula and also by well respected campdrafter Wayne McLennan.

On the proven progeny front, just one example of Tradition's potent power as a sire, is when the chip-off-the-old-block mare - Luckenough Horizon - won over $30,000 in the Landmark Classic Campdraft and then went on to sell for $34,000 at this year's Landmark Classic Sale. Tradition's sire, Kirkby Stud Officer, needs little introduction to Australian Stock Horse fans, as he and his progeny have consistently excelled at campdrafting, challenges and shows.

One of the mares currently in foal to Tradition is Warregold Cindy - the lovely buckskin mare who shot to fame in the 2011 floods, when she was rescued by being swum behind an SES rescue boat. The Keatings decided to keep Cindy as the perfect mount for their children due to her lovely temperament - it will be wonderful to see what she can produce by Tradition.

Specifics:

1996, 15.1hh, bay Australian Stock Horse stallion (Kirkby Stud Officer x Bookine Patsy)

Why he's on the A-list:

Tradition has a very long line of credentials! He has won and placed at countless open campdrafts, challenges, and other events. Tradition has the most honest, reliable and quiet nature and he is passing this temperament on to his progeny. He is the type of horse that is a pleasure to have around and shows all the characteristics of a true Champion.

What we really love:

Not only is Tradition a super talented performer - he passes winning ways on to his progeny, who are showing them how it's done at the top levels of campdrafting!

Warrenbri Regal

The more Thoroughbred type of Tradition is very complimentary to the Keatings' mares who are by their other stallion, Warrenbri Regal (x Warrenbri Romeo), an extremely well bred and performed sire. "Regal has exceptional conformation with strong solid bone and mares by him and other stallions of similar type, should go really well with Tradition. We have mares currently in foal to Tradition and are excited about what they will produce. The cross of these two stallions should give quiet, trainable temperaments and great talent."
