Once again Jane Frankum and John Vallance of Equestrian Sports Promotions have excelled and staged a superb four day Summer Showjumping Classic Show at SIEC from 9th to 12th Dec 2010 on behalf of the NSW Jumping Council.

The precedent of bringing   Leopoldo Palacios, arguably the best course designer in the world, out each year, has ensured the international reputation of this show, as has the attendance of Chief Judge & Chairman of the ground Jury Mr Ny Ho from Singapore.

The weather was perfect, entries high and event director, Jane Frankum said, “This has been one of our most successful shows to date. We have been running at this venue since 2003 and it is improving every time.

We have a loyal group of helpers who come back every year and they work tirelessly, as do the assistant course designers who come to work & learn with Leopoldo.

Our event could not be run without our sponsors: Equestrian NSW, Equestrian Australia, Australian Sports Commission, The Oaks Sport Horses, Winning Appliances, Department of Sport & Recreation NSW.

Southern Cross Horse Transport, Amcal Pharmacy Bargo, Wentworth Saddles, Rivenlee Horse Floats, Edwena Mitchell Catering, Yalambi Farm Stud, Cudgegong Warmbloods, Cera Performance Horse, Global Entries Online, The Horse Magazine, Stallions at Stud, Redgum Saddlery, Equissentials, Equine World  & Printhie Wines.”

The feature event of the show, the CSI World Cup Qualifier, attracts an informed and enthusiastic audience, and this year, a record number of entries. Despite the absence of some upper echelon riders, the field was even and saw the encouraging debut of some younger combinations.

The first round was big but fair and in typical Leopoldo style, rewarded the forward thinking rider.

The field boasted eight riders from Queensland, eight from NSW, five from Victoria and one from South Australia. Father and daughter combinations are not often seen in World Cup events and Hayley & Jamie Coman were a stylish duo.

Only three were clear and the top nine went through to the second round, which was changed, heightened and was much tougher.

Victorian Brook Dobbin on Advisor won with the fastest four faults from Queenslanders Billy Raymont on Stardom second, Cathy Graham on Da Vincis Pride third and Brett Warren on Cheezy Z fourth. Julia Hargreaves on Vedor was fifth for NSW, Adam Prime on SaddleUp Darn Good sixth (Victoria), Anthony Thomas on Levitation (SA) seventh and Sheridan Manuel on Renmano (Qld) eighth.

Sadly absent from the WC field was Nik Taliano from Wilberforce, who has been performing well in a limited number of World Cup starts on his exciting young horse Ambrose. Nik lost a finger in a work accident during the week and will be out of action for a while.

The other finals classes on the World Cup day were equally exciting and saw some excellent performances.

The Wentworth Saddles Mini Prix was a tough class with only 5 clears from 45 starters. James Mooney from Kulnura was masterful on Sue Knox’s talented imported mare Yirrkala Cortina to win against the clock.

“This arena and Leopold’s tracks suited my mare perfectly,” a delighted James explained at the presentation.

The Southern Cross Horse Transport Young Rider Final was confirmation of the talent and consistency of one the most successful young riders we have seen in many decades. Tom McDermott of Wagga won the final with SL Limerick, after running first in the first qualifier on Friday, and first second and third in the second qualifier on Saturday.

The Oaks Sport Horses Super junior Final was stylishly won by Georgie Harvey, daughter of electrical retail magnate Gerry Harvey, on the former eventer Glenorchy Hope.

The Amateur Championships was a popular win to Les Simmons and the Winning Appliances Future Stars Final (or Futurity), was won by Jamie Kermond on BWS Lincoln.

Day one was devoted to Oaks Young Horse Medallion Finals. This day is growing in popularity and is proving popular amongst breeders to showcase their progeny and is an interesting event for spectators to see how different trainers prepare their young stock.
Judged by four judges, points are awarded for 20% conformation, 30% flat work and 50% jumping. The judges for the flat work and conformation were Tony Norman and Paul Athanasoff, both very successful showjumping riders and performance horse breeders.

The judges for the jumping were Shane Davidson from Fairbanks Stud in Queensland and Leopoldo Palacios from Venezuela, our chief course designer for the show, who described our system of young horse competition as one of the best he had seen.

A fantastic evening’s social gathering was held in the sponsors’ marquee on the first night to hear Leopoldo talk about WEG and World Showjumping, the importance of Young Horse Classes and much more. What a Very interesting man and great evening for riders, organisers, coaches, and everyone interested in our sport.
