Sydney Morning Herald Rates Funny Horses

Published on Friday, January 7, 2011 in General

Among the many delights of Disney's new retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale, Tangled, is Maximus, a palace horse that goes in hot pursuit of Flynn Rider, Rapunzel's would-be suitor.

Part-horse, part-bloodhound, part-comedian, Maximus is not only the funniest thing in the film, he takes pride of place in pop culture's pantheon of funny horses and horse-like creatures. (You didn't think we were going to leave zebras out, did you?)

Here's the Sydney Morning Herald's top ten funny horses:

10. Tinfoil from Drip-Along Daffy (1951) and My Little Duckaroo (1954)
In the Chuck Jones parody of the Lone Ranger and his horse Silver, Daffy Duck's western hero rode astride Tinfoil, the most bored horse in film history. While Daffy screams about being "the righter of wrongs, the doer of heroic deeds!", Tinfoil lets out a burp. Gotta love him.

9. The horse from the original Police Academy (1984)
The nag doesn't actually do anything. It just stands there while the cop on the motorcycle hits the car and flies head first into the horse's ... well, you gotta see the film to get the full impact. A quarter of a century on, it's still hilarious.

8. The drunken horse from Cat Ballou (1965)
Hey, if you're going to go drinking with Lee Marvin, don't expect to be able to stand up on all fours.

7. Stripes the zebra from Racing Stripes (2005)
A zebra that thinks it's a racehorse? That's just crazy! The Rocky of equine films.

6. Bullseye from Toy Story 2 & 3
He might be made of moulded plastic but he's self-effacing and loveable. And modest, too.

5. Francis the talking mule
With seven hit films to his credit in the 1950s, Francis is the only equine to score his own franchise. Eat that, National Velvet!

4. Donkey from Shrek

Irritating as heckfire to grown-ups, sure, but the kids seem to love him. And it's the funniest thing Eddie Murphy's done since Pluto Nash.

3. Neidermeyer's horse from Animal House (1978)

Oh, how the campus bully loved that thing. So when John Belushi and co. accidentally kill it by scaring it to death in the dean's office and then the guy comes in the next day to chop it up with the chainsaw - that's comedy gold.

2. Quick Draw McGraw (1959-62) - pictured
This animated horse rode across the TV screen and into our hearts. The only horse to score his own syndicated cartoon series. Take that, Francis!

1. Mister Ed (1961-66)
Need advice? Comfort? A shoulder to cry on? Whenever suburban everyman Wilbur Post (Allan Young) needed help, he turned to the wisecracking horse in his backyard. Not just the king of all screen horses but can you imagine anybody daring to make such a thing today? Come on, Hollywood! Let's see Mister Ed: the Movie!
