College Wild Thing, one of the final lots of the day at the 39th Annual Dalby Stock Horse sale, caused buyers to sit up and pay attention.

After some back and forth in the bidding Evan and Kimberley Acton from Melungra Station near Julia Creek bought the top-priced horse for $30,000 from one of their former workmen, reports abc.net.au

Vendor Zac Croker, who now lives at Gunnedah in northern New South Wales, is parting with his mare after years of successful campdrafting.

"I went to Emerald Ag College and she was one of the breakers that year. I really liked her and was able to buy her and I've been drafting her."

"She's won three novices and had a lot of places, but she's gone to the best home I could have imagined."

Evan Acton says he plans to keep drafting her and will use her to breed with as well.

For the first time the Dalby Stock Horse sale also featured a Stallion Spectacular where some of the breed's leading stallions were on display on Saturday night.

Overall the sale averaged $7,412 which was similar to last year but the clearance rate improved with 131 of the 161 horses sold.

The mares averaged $8,730, the geldings averaged $5,554 and one stallion made $14,000.
