The second training weekend for all WA state teams was held on 24-25 March, prior to everyone heading east to Warwick Queensland, for the Barastoc Polocrosse Nationals, being held 23-29 April.

Thankfully the weather was cooler for this training weekend, although the sun still had a nasty kick in the middle of the day. The under 24’s women’s team spent Saturday morning practising set plays before gathering with the rest of the state players to listen to a very informative talk from Colin Price, national sales manager of Mitavite, official sponsor of the state team. At the end of his talk Colin passed on tips from Sonja Johnson, drawing from her wealth of experience, in travelling  performance horses east.

Following lunch there was a session with the Sports Psych and team vet. The issue of Hendra Virus was a concern that had not previously needed to be considered by teams going to Queensland.

The first game for the weekend was at 3.00pm against the might of the Open Women’s team. Invaluable being able to use their strength to test first and second horses and different combinations of players. Then a rush to practice the skit for the night, have a shower and eat.

Too soon, it was time for the dreaded, under prepared, under rehearsed compulsory skit night.  This year was even more hilarious than usual. Nothing is funnier than other people making fools of themselves although this year the skits had a bit of class. The Under 24 Women’s team donned goggles and huge undies and did a land version of synchronised swimming to great acclamation.

On Sunday the team played both the Juniors and Masters Men. Players were able to cement their choice of first horse and work on different play strategies.

Thankfully no horses seemed to have sustained any injuries over the weekend. The girls are playing well and with the experience of Pearl Marriott as coach should give all other states a run for their money.  Warwick can’t come soon enough!

Horsezone is the main sponsor of the Women's Stay tuned for updates on the teams' trip east.
