The East Moreton Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society held the Queensland Championship Show at Woodford on Sunday 28 August, in conjunction with their annual Futurities, Maturity, Hack Challenges, Super Horse and Youth Challenges, which were held on the Saturday.

Saturday dawned dismally grey and the weather grew worse as the day went on, so by the end of competition there were plenty of wet horses and people!  Despite the awful conditions, all classes were held except for cattle working, which was replaced by a Station Horse event to complete the Super Horse Challenge, and the Youth Time Trial (which unfortunately had to be completely cancelled due to torrential rain).  Considering the inclement conditions, a good day was had by all and most attendees remained in good spirits.

Thankfully conditions were brighter on Sunday and blue skies greeted competitors for the Championship Show, with mud in the working classes arena the only reminder of the previous day's deluge.

Sunday featured another full program including led and hack classes, station horse events and working classes.

Numbers were down slightly from Saturday, especially in the Youth classes but there were still plenty of good quality horses presented to the judges - Vicki Evans and Leanne Patison.

Supreme Led Horse of the Show was won by Yagoneya Slick Magic, while Champion Hack went to the lovely black mare Milly Millions, Champion Junior Working ASH to Kayleen Sutton's Doongara Power N Rose and Champion Senior Working ASH to Peter Allan's Stockhaven Ballerina.  Champion Working Stallion and Reserve Champion Senior Working went to Mike Davies' Minatoka True Grit - a very talented stallion with an amazingly quiet temperament.  Stay tuned to Horsezone's Stallions at Stud for more on this lovely stallion.

Overall High Point Youth of the Show was awarded to the very talented Kayccee Wallen and Willdraft Lleyton.  Congratulations to Kayccee on a great show.

Overall High Point Horse of the Show went to the stunning black stallion, Illalong Talisman, who you will find listed in Horsezone's Stallions at Stud section!  Congratulations to Talisman and Katie Thorne. Watch Katie and Talisman's Stallion Hack winning workout here.

Horsezone were proud sponsors of the show and in addition to sponsoring various classes, also donated a jacket each to a junior and senior youth competitor who displayed exceptional sportsmanship during the course of the show, as chosen by the judges.  This was not an easy task! The youth competitors all seemed to show exceptional sportsmanship and etiquette in the ring and judges had a tough task!  One example of the friendly and supportive attitude of the young competitors was when everyone got behind five year old (yes, five years old and not competing on a lead line!) Caitlin Olive, when she finished her working pattern - every other youth cheered and clapped for this plucky little girl!

Despite all the wonderful attitudes shown by the Youth, there could only be the two winners and the jacket for junior youth went to a thrilled Madison Bryans riding Collinspark Steve.  Madison shares Steve with her dad John Bryans - this horse truly typifies the easy going nature and versatility of the Australian Stock Horse.  Winner of the jacket for senior youth was the very deserving 16 year old Tayla Hill, riding Syliva Vale Platoon, who was also excited to become the proud owner of a Horsezone jacket.  Stay tuned to future newsletters where we'll be doing a Rising Stars feature on Tayla.

Madison and Tayla not only showed great sportsmanship at the show but also top horsemanship!  The two largest sections of the show were the Pleasure Hack, which Madison won on Collinspark Steve and the Station Horse, which Tayla won on Sylvia Vale Platoon. These sections are open to all ages and all horses - what a fantastic effort from two juniors!

There was also a Sportsmanship/Overall Competitor of the Show Award - the Steve Fletcher Memorial Trophy and this was won by John Bryans who in between competing at the show, was to be found running around and helping out with stewarding and setting up gear.  Well done John!

I was very impressed with the horsemanship and sportsmanship displayed, the wide range of classes on offer and the friendly relaxed atmosphere of the show.  I can definitely see why Australian Stock Horse fans love these wonderful horses!
