About the Young Riders

The opportunity for these young riders to compete in Malaysia arose when popular racing identity and business woman, Gaye Gauci-Marchant, was asked to be a key note speaker at the University of Technology of Malaysia's International Equine Trades and Business Expo dinner and run workshops from 9-12 April. Not one to miss an opportunity to help out up and coming riders, Gaye traded her appearance fee for sponsorship of eight young Australians to compete at the UTM International Horse Show!

Gaye says, "when the organisers rang and asked me to open their seminar/expo and be their keynote speaker they said how much is your fee? I asked 'what is the event leading into?' and they said 'our International Horse Show' and I said 'if I can bring a team of young pony club riders to compete, I will do it for free and any of their parents that come will help out with all the events as well...' they said 'Absolutely!' So that was that - I swapped my fee to give these riders an opportunity, which I think is a great swap, as these are kids with big dreams who come from places where no-one sees them and would otherwise not get the chance to do something like this. The eight chosen riders are so excited!".

"This is the third lot of kids I have been able to take overseas to compete in similar competitions. I make sure it never costs them or their families one cent as they don’t come from wealthy families. I was one of them once and my horse racing dream took me all around the world... so can theirs, but only if we help them see that."

Since they were selected, these dedicated young people have been working hard holding fund raising events to raise the money needed for their uniforms, airfares and insurance. There has been wonderful responses from small local communities, such as Myrtleford, which managed to raise $4000.00 in one night, with only 120 people present!

Below are PDF profiles on the riders, "which shows why I picked them!" comments Gaye, "they are good country kids that may never have had a chance to represent their town let alone Australia. So talented and hidden away in the bush... but not now! They are already the local celebs of their little towns who are running fund raisers and raffles just to help them get to Malaysia in April."

How Can You Help?

By bidding on the fabulous Phar Lap pictures!

Also, it's fantastic to see the locals getting behind the young riders, however, sponsorship from the wider business and equestrian community would also be greatly appreciated to help the riders achieve their dreams. Sponsorship of a rider, such as Molly Holmes who is still working on raising the funds, or any donations would be a great help. This is why it's so important that the Phar Lap pictures sell for what they are worth - to provide a major injection to the fund raising efforts.

If you are interested in sponsoring a member of the junior equestrian team please see the sponsorship letter PDF below for more details.
