Club of the Moment: Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club
Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club, otherwise known as 'the Home of Brisbane Eventing', is located in the city's western suburbs and has everything for Equestrian enthusiasts, in the Sunshine State's South East!
Featuring a dedicated committee, great facilities, top quality instructors, plus plenty of clinics and competitions throughout the year, it's easy to see why Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club won the prestigious Equestrian Queensland Club of the Year in 2009.
The Club currently has 90 riding members and 50 associate members, who mainly consist of parents of junior members (riders under 18 must have one parent who is a member) or past riding members who want to keep in touch with the club and its activities.
One of the secrets of success for this club is that members are expected to donate eight hours of working bee time per quarter to assist with general maintenance of the club grounds and preparation for competition days. This always ensures there are plenty of helpers leading up to and following events! In lieu of attending working bees, members have the option of paying an additional fee per quarter.
All new memberships need to be approved by the management committee which meets each month and members must be a member of Equestrian Australia.
Members of Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club enjoy the following benefits:
- Use of the arena for training, including the arena lights at night;
- Full use of the cross country course with exception of National rule closure time ;
- Use of the yards and wash bays; and
- Access to visiting instructors who teach regularly on the grounds.
The club also has agistment for 20 horses, however, there is usually a waiting list for availability.
In addition to the flood lit arena, showjumps and other facilities, the Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club has a cross country course spread over approximately 40 acres of agistment land and riverfront parks. It caters to all levels from EA Introductory to CNC**. The course is continually maintained and upgraded to help ensure the safety of the horses and riders.
Last year the Club built steps ( in memory of a past member associated with the club, Tony Stefan, who in recent years contributed in a very big way to the their current position.
As with many places in Queensland, the Fig Tree Pocket grounds did suffer flood damage in January, which delayed their first 2011 One Day Event, however, with everyone's help the Club was soon ready to go again.

Instructors
Current instructors at the club include Guy Creighton, Kevin McNab, Sasha Ulasowski, Laura Wool, Rebel Morrow and Shane Davidson who are available on various days for lessons.
As well as hourly lessons, in the past 12 months the club has run clinics with Matt Ryan, David Green, Rebel Morrow, Kevin McNab and an Eventing Queensland Clinic that featured Jen Hamilton (Canadian Showjumping Team Coach) as an instructor.
Events
In addition to access to top instructors, members of the Club can participate in various competitions throughout the year including three one day events, three dressage days and showjumping nights with Guy Creighton, which have been started recently and will be run every couple of months throughout the year.
Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club keenly supports Australia's proud Olympic eventing history and feels that their events provide elite riders with the opportunity to maintain and improve their skills. The Club is famous for holding efficiently run events that are always on time and offer an enjoyable experience for competitors - the events are so popular that entries are usually filled up within an hour of them being accepted! So if you're keen to attend a Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club competition be sure to get in quick.
Even if you're unable to compete at the eventing competitions, as a member you can still be part of all the excitement because there are plenty of jobs that need to be done when running a successful event, and the Club is greatly appreciative of any volunteer assistance.
In addition to the Club's events, they also hosted the following Interschool Competitions in 2010:
- Stuartholme Showjumping;
- State Eventing;
- IGGS Dressage; and
- South East Queensland Regionals.
