Edwina Tops-Alexander to take on Captaincy Role
By: Michelle Cook/Equestrian Australia
Australia’s leading jumping rider Edwina Tops-Alexander will lend her wealth of experience and knowledge of elite showjumping to broaden the high performance direction of the sport for Australian riders both domestically and internationally.
The two-time Olympian and World Equestrian Games representative has been appointed Captain of the Australian Showjumping team in a move to modernise the sport and lead by example from her hugely successful career both on and off the horse.
Equestrian Australia’s High Performance Manager Chris Webb said Tops-Alexander’s appointment is significant for Australian Showjumping.
“Edwina’s contribution to the sport is something to be marvelled at. We have been engaging with Edwina since we have restructured the High Performance program and have been impressed by her eagerness to be involved and influence the direction of the sport for the Australian Team.”
“Tapping into that knowledge, professionalism and experience will benefit riders and horses alike as we take the next steps to where Australian Showjumping needs to go.”
Sydney born Tops-Alexander moved to Europe when she was 24 and with two global champions tour series crowns among her many accolades, the formidable competitor knows what it takes to succeed.
"Over the past years I have often been asked many questions regarding ideas of how to improve, enhance and advise EA of how I think Australian Showjumping in Europe can move to reach higher levels.
“Recently EA approached me with the idea of a Captaincy role to give advice and ideas of how Australian riders can have a better perspective and understanding whilst competing in Europe for the lead up to championships.
“I'm very happy that I can be of some assistance to give my knowledge and expertise since arriving in Europe 15 years ago.
“We all have to start somewhere and as long as there is good work ethics and an open attitude everybody deserves a chance.
“I hope my role will be able to benefit EA and riders and I look forward in helping to achieve a higher standard for our sport,” she said.
