Jockey Simone Montgomerie has died after being thrown from her horse at the Darwin Cup.
The mother-of-one was riding Riahgrand in Race 6 at Fannie Bay when the horse threw Ms Montgomerie to the ground 100m from the finish line.
Paramedics treated Ms Montgomerie, 26, before placing her on a stretcher, the NT News reports.
The Darwin Turf Club has confirmed Ms Montgomerie's death. Earlier, the club cancelled the iconic race meeting.
"As far as we are concerned, Simone was our family and we are all devastated by this accident," said club chairman Brett Dixon.
