Sun Shines for Kilcoy Pony Club Campdraft

Published on Monday, October 25, 2010 in General
Parts of Kilcoy, in beautiful south east Queensland, have recently spent a fair bit of time under water, so Kilcoy Pony Club were feeling very lucky on Saturday 23 October when the rain stayed away, providing a beautiful day for their annual Campdraft. Along with the Kilcoy members, competitors from Pony Clubs across south east Queensland, including Kilkivan, Oakey, Wandai, Laidley, Southside, Delaneys Creek, Maroochy, Burpengary and Nambour made up the 87 entries for the day.

There were 180 head of cattle donated by local producers and Judge Ron Dunning presided over all entrants, who had two runs each in their relevant age groups. Age groups ran from 8 – 10 year olds right through to the seniors, which meant a long, hot but happy day for competitors and organisers alike.

After the official campdrafting was completed, a bareback campdraft was held, which provided plenty of thrills and spills with riders trying to stay on board whilst cutting out a cow and guiding it around the course. Most campdraft competitors stayed over night and competed in the gymkhana that was held on Sunday, resulting in plenty of fun and an enjoyable weekend for the various Pony Clubs’ campdrafting and sporting enthusiasts.

Kilcoy Pony Club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2011 and were thrilled to have the services of Ron Dunning as judge for their campdraft, as Ron was one of the original members when the club first started. There are currently approximately 60 members in the Kilcoy Pony Club and they mainly enjoy Campdrafting and sporting events, with members regularly travelling to other Pony Clubs for competitions, as well as participating in events at their home base – the picturesque Kilcoy Show Grounds.
