The YVDC Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser Dressage Championships were held on Sunday 14 October 2012 at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre and after days of bleak wet, windy weather in Victoria, it was a delightful surprise to wake up to blue skies and brilliant sunshine on Sunday!

The Yarra Valley Dressage Club biannual Fundraiser Competition this year was targeting Ovarian Cancer Australia – the previous three had focused on Breast Cancer Research and had contributed over $22,000 to that worthy cause.

Entries were high in most of the levels from Preliminary to Grand Prix and it was good to see a broad representation of ponies and horses ridden by amateurs and professionals alike. Classes were held both in and outdoors – giving many competitors the chance to ride at least one of their tests in the large indoor arena. Some judges kindly donated their time and sponsorship for the classes was at an all time high this year. Prize money was offered for first to third places, sashes to sixth and lovely embroidered Championship Rugs to each level winner. A special award for cancer survivors who competed - “Live to Ride, Ride to Live” (an embroidered show rug set) was made to the rider with highest percentage on the day.

Horsezone made a generous cash donation to Ovarian Cancer Australia and provided 10 Advertising Listing Vouchers valued at $60 each which were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Silent Auction included new items such as quality bridles, halters and lead ropes, jodhpurs, riding shirts,  saddle blankets, gloves, a RM Williams jacket, a gourmet basket, saddle cover, Bates dressage saddle, water heater, photo frames etc. A raffle for a box full of pet products was won by a competitor who also happens to be a vet and so she donated it on to the Victorian Animal Aid.

The total amount raised has not yet been confirmed, but should be a substantial contribution towards the ongoing research into Ovarian Cancer.
