Loads of fun, willing and competitive
Safe, sound and loves his humans!
Berringa Second Chance, affectionately known as “Chance,” is a fun, forward and experienced gelding who has been a much-loved partner for junior and adult riders alike. He has been ridden consistently by junior riders, competing at pony club and interschools, and has proven himself to be reliable, athletic and enjoyable. Chance’s sale presents an opportunity to purchase an established, well-educated horse who would thrive in a jumping-focused home and genuinely enjoys having a job.
Education, skills and experience: Chance is a well-educated horse who has spent the majority of his recent career focused on showjumping, with competition experience up to 105cm and schooling courses of 110–115cm. He is forgiving of rider errors, turns on a dime and is honest to a fence, offering automatic flying changes when jumping.
On the flat, Chance is capable and correctly educated, with leg yield, shoulder-in, walk-to-canter and canter-to-walk transitions established. He willingly works into a contact, has three good paces and is soft and light in the bridle. When jumps are present, he can become hotter and more forward, which is why he is best suited to a rider who enjoys a responsive showjumper or who has a flatwork arena without jumps in it.
Chance has also done extensive trail riding, low-level cross-country schooling, and is unbothered by traffic, farm machinery, livestock, dogs and general busy environments.
General demeanour under saddle: Under saddle, Chance is forward, willing and responsive. He is tolerant of rider mistakes, soft in the contact and enjoys being ridden. He is particularly fun to jump!
Current workload / fitness: Chance is currently in regular work, being ridden five or more times per week. He enjoys frequent riding but does not require constant work to remain safe and reliable, and is generally the same horse day-to-day.
Handling: Chance is straightforward and well mannered to handle. He is easy to catch, leads calmly, ties up without fuss and is tolerant of handler mistakes. He self-loads, travels quietly, unloads calmly and is easy to clip, wash, shoe and manage. He is reliable for both the farrier and vet.
Behaviour: Chance is an affectionate and genuine horse who enjoys people and having a job. He can occasionally be a little looky in new environments but he is generally consistent and settles quickly with reassurance. Chance may neigh if separated from a companion when out and he did (with previous owners, 18 months ago and hasn’t happened with current owner) occasionally kick out in the canter transition - however, he still gets on with the job. He has no vices and is very safe at all times.
Feeding and management: Chance is a very good doer and thrives on a high-fibre, low-starch diet. He is fed hay and hard feed twice daily due to limited pasture, and does best on a plain, grain-free regime. He can live in a herd or alone, but we don’t think he would not suit a fully stabled lifestyle. He is comfortable being yarded at shows provided he has company and access to hay.
Medical history: Chance has no significant medical issues. He may snort or cough briefly at the beginning of rides, as many horses do. He has a small, old slab fracture to an upper molar, which his dentist is not concerned about. He has a few minor cosmetic scars and a very old splint, that do not affect him, and are very common. He is currently vaccinated for tetanus and strangles, with dental care up to date. A veterinary examination is welcome at the buyer’s expense.
Rider Suitability: Chance best suits a Capable Rider, who is confident riding forward and responsive horses. He has previously been ridden successfully by confident junior riders. Chance would not suit a nervous or passive rider, particularly when jumping. He thrives with a rider who enjoys a forward ride and allows him to move freely to a fence.
Reason for sale: Chance is offered for sale due to a change in personal circumstances. This is a regretful sale, and his owner is seeking a knowledgeable, caring home where he will be genuinely valued and enjoyed as someone’s “number one” horse.
