Introduction: Princess Keikilani, affectionately known as ‘Kei’, is a beautifully educated, genuine and talented Thoroughbred mare with an outstanding competition record across eventing and dressage. At 14 years old, Kei is in her prime and offers a rare opportunity to purchase a seasoned and competitive schoolmaster who is equally capable of teaching a rider or excelling with a more experienced competitor. She is a very reluctant sale, offered only due to her rider’s upcoming surgery, and she deserves to continue her successful career with a rider who will value her talent and love of competition.
Education, skills and experience: Kei is exceptionally well educated, having competed successfully through EA levels from EV80 right through to 2 Eventing*. She is also very established in the dressage arena, with flying changes, counter canter, leg yield, collection and half pass all confirmed. She is consistent, reliable and genuinely enjoys being in work and out competing. Kei is currently in work, ridden three or more times per week, and is safe to hop on after time off.
Dressage: Kei is a very talented dressage horse and consistently holds her own amongst Warmbloods in competitive dressage classes. She has competed successfully at Novice and Elementary Dressage, with wins and placings at State and major events, including the 2025 Boneo Park Off The Track Carnival Dressage Championship. She willingly collects, is responsive and expressive, and produces polished, competitive tests.
Showjumping: Kei is a careful and capable showjumper who is adjustable and competitive. She is accustomed to different atmospheres and environments and is confident with jump fill, combinations and technical courses as part of her eventing career.
Cross Country: Cross country is truly where Kei shines. She is an absolute machine — bold, brave and incredibly honest. Kei never refuses, is unfazed by water, ditches, banks or fill, and loves her job. She is quick-thinking, confident and will always bring her rider home smiling. Kei has an exceptional cross country record and is a genuine “point and shoot” ride at all levels she has competed.
General demeanor under saddle: Kei is a willing, responsive and genuine mare to ride. She is forward moving without being excessive and adapts easily to the confidence and ability of her rider. She is generally calm and reliable, tolerant of rider mistakes, and steps up noticeably with a more experienced rider. She is not completely unflappable, but she is sensible, educated and focused on her job once the saddle goes on.
Current workload/ fitness: Kei is currently in full work and ridden three or more times per week. She does not require regular riding to remain safe and reliable and is happy to hop straight on after a spell.
Handling and general behaviour:
Kei is easy and straightforward to handle. She is easy to catch, leads calmly, self-loads and travels quietly, ties up happily and is easy to wash, clip and manage. She is reliable for the farrier and vet and is generally a no-fuss mare who enjoys getting to work. She is happy being stabled for extended periods, including 24-hour stabling in busy environments, and is equally comfortable paddocked.
Kei can occasionally be a little nippy when fastening rug buckles or putting on front boots. She is a mild windsucker, though this has never affected her health or performance and is only observed if she is bored without access to feed. During Spring or windy conditions, she can be sensitive to pollen and insects; a nose net (provided) effectively manages this and has been a game changer during dressage.
Feeding and management: Kei is currently hard fed and maintained on a consistent feeding program, including hay, chaff, beet, oil and supplements. She is well managed and thrives with attentive care. Management is very flexible — she can live alone, be part of a larger herd, or be stabled and paddocked on a routine.
Medical history: Kei has minor scars consistent with most performance horses. She can experience minor skin irritations related to grass or insect exposure, which are well managed with rugging and veterinary guidance. This does not affect her performance. She receives monthly Pentosan Gold injections for preventative maintenance only. She is up to date with vaccinations (June 2025), dental (June 2025) and farrier work. Vet checks are welcome at the buyer’s expense.
Rider Suitability: Confident Novice (under instruction) to Intermediate Rider, or an experienced and capable rider wanting a competitive horse ready to go. Kei would be ideal for a mature Interschool or junior rider stepping up onto their first big horse, or an adult rider seeking a proven, competitive eventer.
Reason for sale: Kei is offered for sale due to her rider undergoing upcoming hip surgery, which will prevent riding for 6–12 months. She is a much-loved mare and far too talented to sit in the paddock. We are seeking a competitive eventing home where she will be taken out regularly and allowed to continue doing what she loves.
