Former federal agriculture minister Peter McGauran has called for a national cull of fruit bats to check the southward spread of the lethal Hendra virus. Mr McGauran, now chief executive of horse industry body Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, said the emergence of the disease on NSW's mid-north coast was a "crunch point"....
The Kunjin Virus - Another Deadly Threat to Australian Horses

As if Hendra virus isn't frightening enough, now there's another potentially deadly virus infecting horses. It's called Kunjin and is a mosquito borne virus with terrible symptoms. This year alone six Queensland horses have died from the illness and recently seven animals in South Australia were euthanized....
