PLEASE NOTE:

History:
Davrol Diva ("Diva"), a 14 year old Warmblood mare, was re-assessed at Willinga Park Vet Hospital on February 12th 2025 after approximately 16 months of rest and rehabilitation following diagnosis of desmopathy of the medial collateral ligament of the left front distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ).
In October 2023, Diva underwent lameness examination. At that time, a mild and consistent left front limb lameness was present when trotting Diva in a straight line. At that time, the left front limb lameness became markedly exacerbated when lunging Diva to the left and resolved following a palmar digital (PD) nerve block. Digital radiographs of both front feet were acquired in October 2023 and revealed osseous remodeling and osteophytosis at the dorsal aspect of the proximal articular margin of the 2nd phalanx consistent with osteoarthritis of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). In addition, an MRI of the left front foot was pursued for comprehensive assessment. MRI revealed moderate desmopathy of the medial collateral ligament of the left front DIPJ and moderate osteoarthritis and synovitis of the left front DIPJ.
At that time and based on clinical and imaging findings, it was elected to pursue a rehabilitation and rest program for Diva.
Diva got pregnant and had an uncomplicated delivery on January 2025.
Diva remained in rest between October 2023 and February 2025.

Examination: Vital parameters were within normal limits. Marked varus deviation was present in both front fetlocks. Hard swelling was present on the dorsolateral aspect of both front pasterns. Marked medial to lateral hoof imbalance (left > right) was also present. Mildly under-ran heels were present on both front feet. Diva was noted to "paddle" with both front limbs when walking/trotting in a straight line.
Gait was assessed in different surfaces (asphalt, firm rubber, arena) and no lameness was evident when trotting Diva in a straight line or when lunging in a circle to both directions. No lameness was noted following diagnostic flexion of the upper and lower aspects of the limbs. Range of motion was deemed as within normal limits upon passive flexion of the distal
aspect of both front limb.

Recommendations:
- Based on lack of lameness following prolonged rest and rehabilitation, it was recommended for Diva to progressively resume training. It was recommended to repeat radiographs of both front feet and to pursue intra-articular therapy of the PIPJ and DIPJ prior to resuming training and it was elected not to pursue at the time.
