Report Reveals Qld Government's Handling of Hendra Deficient

The Queensland Ombudsman has reported a number of failures in several government agencies in the handling of hendra virus outbreaks. The report, released by Ombudsman Phil Clark, examined the State Government's response to six major outbreaks of the virus between 2006 and 2009. His report says outdated and inconsistent policies and procedures were used, there was inadequate training and resources for agency staff, and communication was poor. He says the recommendations from previous internal and external reviews were not implemented. ...

Did anyone check out Lonely Planet's latest documentary, Free Rein, which aired last night for the first time? There were plenty of horses featured, as legendary Australian actors - husband and wife - Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward saddled up and followed a stockman's trail through the harsh Australian outback. I loved that Rachel's little Appaloosa was called Jojo and that the pair obviously had heaps of fun droving and viewing the wonders of the bush from the best possible location - the back of a horse. ...

After three weeks of comprehensive laboratory testing, Biosecurity Queensland believes that either scrub tick infestation or botulism was the likely cause of the deaths of 22 horses at a Kooralbyn property. Chief Biosecurity Officer Jim Thompson said both conditions caused progressive muscular paralysis, as was seen with these horses, and it was often hard to differentiate between the two. "Botulism is a bacteria that lives in soil and produces a toxin that affects the nervous system if ingested," he said. ...

Donna Smith, Waikato, riding Sarah Varley’s Just Chocolate has taken the lead in the Bell Tea Super League following the second event in the series, the CIC3* (Advanced) class at the Woodhill Sands Horse Trials at the weekend. New Zealand dressage has created history by qualifying a team to the Olympic Games after the final leg of the regional qualifier in the Netherlands overnight. The Kiwis competed their qualifying leg in Sydney late last week, against half the Australian team, with the remainder of the Australian team going against South Africa in Ermelo. There were just two slots available for the African, Middle East, South East Asia and Oceania regions, which went to New Zealand and Australia....
